Arthroscopic Surgery

Arthroscopic surgery is a surgical method used to diagnose and treat diseases within the joint. It involves sending a small camera and surgical instruments into the joint to examine the tissues and structures inside the joint.

Arthroscopic surgery is usually used on knee, elbow, shoulder, ankle and hand joints. It can also be performed on the lower back, lumbar region and hip joints. Arthroscopic surgery can be performed with the patient asleep under general anesthesia or with local anesthesia. A camera and surgical instruments are sent into the joint to visualize and treat diseases or damage within the joint. Diseases treated with arthroscopic surgery include:

  • Knee meniscus tears
  • Shoulder tendinitis (inflammation of the spinal cord)
  • Elbow sprains
  • Arthritis (osteoarthritis)
  • Fractures on the joint surface

Arthroscopic surgery is a preferred method because it is performed with smaller incisions and offers a shorter recovery time than open surgery. However, it may not be suitable for all diseases and conditions and your doctor will advise you on the most appropriate treatment.
